Tey av Kamarinum – Honoring Faroese Musical Pioneers
Tey av Kamarinum were trailblazers in Faroese entertainment music. The special thing about the seven siblings from Konradsbrekkan in Tórshavn was that they both wrote and sang in Faroese. Among them, the particularly gifted Nicolina av Kamarinum stood out, writing many songs that have become folk classics, still sung by Faroese people of all ages today. On Ólavsøka, it is a sight to behold as Nicolina’s songs are sung by thousands of people at Vaglið during the midnight song.
They were also quick to adopt foreign music, translating it into Faroese. The band was founded in 1955 and quickly became immensely popular. They performed concerts, at parties, and dances, and released records and songs—music that is still heard and performed today. Wherever they played, venues were packed with enthusiastic audiences.
The honorary concert on Saturday evening, April 11, will be a grand and dignified tribute to their musical legacy. Some of the Faroe Islands’ top musicians will perform and interpret their songs. The exact lineup will be announced soon, but we can promise that these are artists at the very top of their field.
Additionally, a stellar house orchestra will be on stage, accompanying these incredible performers.
The goal is for everyone to leave Varpið humming tunes like “Mær leingist”, “Tá kvøldið kemur”, “Mín fyrsta flamma”, and many more.
There will also be a narrator at the concert, sharing stories about the band and the family, explaining what it was like to be—perhaps—the first pop stars in the Faroe Islands.
Join this musical journey that brings the legacy of Tey av Kamarinum into the present day. 🎶
